How do I find out what options my BMW has?

With its VIN. The BMW build sheet lists every option code the vehicle was built with, plus the paint and trim. A free VIN decoder only reads the make, model year and plant from the number: the options aren't in the VIN, they're in BMW's production records.

What's on a BMW build sheet

What BMW's record looks like

BMW records the equipment in English but, on some US vehicles, the paint and upholstery names in German: the X5 above is "Mineralweiß metallic" (Mineral White metallic) with "Leder Merino elfenbeinweiss" (ivory white Merino leather). We show exactly what BMW recorded and never rewrite it. BMW doesn't publish its original window stickers online, so the build sheet is the record of how the car was specified.

Where to find the VIN

  • Through the windshield, at the bottom corner on the driver's side.
  • On the sticker inside the driver's door jamb.
  • On the title, the registration card and the insurance ID card.

A VIN always has 17 characters and never contains the letters I, O or Q.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a BMW build sheet?

$7.99 per vehicle, with no account. The amount is only authorized on your card and taken once the build sheet arrives. If the maker holds nothing for that VIN, the authorization is released and you pay nothing.

Will it show the BMW paint code?

The build sheet names the factory paint as BMW recorded it. We show exactly what was recorded and never fill in a code.

Does it show the original price?

No. The build sheet is the production record, with no prices. The original window sticker has them.

Does it work for every BMW?

We tested it on real US BMW vehicles before offering it: 4 of 4, model years 2015 to 2020, came back with 41 to 66 entries. Where the maker holds nothing, you're told so and nothing is charged.

How quickly will I get it?

Usually within a few minutes, by email, and you can view it online and save it as a PDF.
