The short answer

How do I check MINI service history?
Enter the MINI's 17-character VIN. MINI dealers in the United States log service visits in BMW Group's dealer system against the VIN, and the report returns each one with its date, mileage, dealership and the work done. You pay only if records are found.
Does MINI's complimentary maintenance show up in the record?
Yes. MINI USA says every new MINI comes with Complimentary Scheduled MINI Maintenance for up to 3 years or 36,000 miles, carried out at an authorized MINI dealer, so those visits sit in the dealer record like any other service.
Does the complimentary maintenance pass to the next owner?
No. MINI USA says it is not transferable to later owners, except within the original owner's household. The visits it paid for stay in the dealer record against the VIN, so a used buyer can still see them.

What a Mini report can look like

Manufacturers don't all keep the same detail, so reports come in four shapes. We've opened the one you're most likely to get. Every entry below is made up; a real report lists the Mini's own visits.

Mini and its dealer records

MINI shares BMW's dealer systems in the United States, and a MINI serviced through the network returns the same kind of record: each visit with its date, mileage and the condition-based items attended to.

How Mini's digital service record works

Like BMW, MINI runs condition-based servicing. The record shows each visit the dealer logged, from a routine oil service to a larger inspection.

Where to find your Mini service history

A car's history is usually spread across a few places, and it is worth checking each one.

  • Mini's dealer system. Every franchised Mini workshop logs its visits against the car's VIN. A Mini dealer will usually print them for the owner; anyone else, a buyer included, can use the check on this page.
  • The Mini owner app, where there is one. Newer cars linked to an owner's account may show recent services there, but only to that account holder.
  • The paper service book. Stamps from dealers and independent garages alike. If it has been lost, a replacement from the manufacturer arrives blank.
  • Independent garage invoices. Work done outside the dealer network only exists on paper, so ask the seller for the folder.

What the MINI dealer record covers

MINI USA lists what its complimentary maintenance includes: engine oil and filter, brake fluid, the cabin microfilter, the engine air filter, spark plugs and the remote key battery, when performed as the maintenance booklet sets out. MINI sells the paid MINI Maintenance+ extension only through authorized MINI dealers. Visits under either are dealer visits, so they appear in the record.

The record does not show work done by an independent shop or at home. If a seller says a MINI was serviced by a specialist, ask for the invoices, because the dealer record will not show those visits.

FAQ

Common questions about Mini service history

How do I check Mini service history online?

Type the car's VIN into the form on this page. We ask Mini's dealer system for every visit logged against that car and show them in date order, usually within a few minutes. It costs $14.99, and the card is only charged if records come back.

How complete is Mini coverage?

Mini dealerships log each service visit in the manufacturer's central system — the date, the odometer reading and the work carried out — and that is what the report returns.

Where is a Mini's service record kept?

In Mini's own dealer system. A franchised Mini workshop logs each visit against the car's VIN, so the entry stays with the car through changes of keeper and registration.

What will I see on a Mini report?

Each visit a franchised Mini workshop logged against the car, listed by date: the odometer reading, the work carried out and the dealer who did it. Recall and warranty visits appear alongside routine servicing.

Why might a Mini with a stamped service book show no records?

Usually because the servicing was done at independent garages, which don't write to Mini's system, or because it was done before the dealer network kept digital records. A book full of independent stamps can be perfectly genuine; it just has to be backed by the paperwork rather than by the dealer system. If we find nothing, your card isn't charged.

Do I need the owner's permission to check a Mini?

No. The VIN is all we need: no log-in, no ownership documents and no contact with the seller. That's why people use it before they buy, to compare what the seller says with what Mini's dealers recorded.

How do I tell whether a Mini was serviced on time?

Put the dates and readings side by side and look at the spacing. Intervals differ by engine and model year, so the handbook has the exact figure for a given car. A gap much longer than the schedule is worth asking the seller about: it may have been an independent service with an invoice in the folder, or it may have been missed.

Is there a free way to see Mini service history?

Sometimes, if you are the keeper. A Mini dealer will often print the history at the service desk if you bring the car's documents, and some Mini owner apps show recent visits for the car linked to your account. Neither helps a buyer looking at someone else's car, and we know of no public Mini website that shows the whole record. Our $14.99 check needs only the VIN, and the card is only charged if records are found.

How to read a Mini service history

A list of dealer visits only helps if you know what to look for. Three checks cover most of what goes wrong with a used Mini's paperwork.

Line the visits up against the schedule

Look at the spacing between visits rather than the number of them. Visits roughly a schedule apart point to a car that was looked after. A long gap is a question for the seller, not a verdict, because the service may well have been done at an independent garage.

Make sure the odometer only goes up

Each visit records the reading on the day. A figure that falls back between one visit and the next is worth questioning before anything else.

Ask about the years the dealer didn't see

Dealer records stop once a car leaves the franchised network. For those years, ask for the invoices from the garage that did the work and check that the dates and readings on them fit with the rest of the history.

How payment works

  1. At checkout your card is authorized for $14.99, not charged.
  2. If we find Mini dealer records, the payment is taken and the report opens.
  3. If we find none, the authorization is released. There is nothing to refund, because nothing was taken.

The link to your report keeps working, so you can come back to it or send it to someone else.
