What does “full service history” mean?

You will see it in listings for BMWs, MINIs and other European-brand cars, and on imports: “FSH”, “full service history”, sometimes “full dealer service history”. Here is what each phrase claims, what it leaves out, and how to check the claim against the manufacturer's own dealer records before you pay.

Full service history versus full dealer service history

Full service history means every scheduled service is documented somewhere: dealer invoices, independent-shop receipts, a stamped booklet. It says the work was done, not who did it. Full dealer service history means every service was performed at a franchised dealership of the manufacturer, and that is the claim you can verify directly, because every such visit is written into the manufacturer's central system against the VIN.

Why the dealer record is the one to check

A seller can assemble a folder; a seller cannot write to the manufacturer's dealer system. Each entry there carries the dealership, the date, the odometer reading and the work performed, and it follows the car through every owner and every state. Laid out in order, the odometer readings are also an independent check on the mileage in the listing.

How to verify the claim by VIN

Ask the seller for the 17-character VIN (it is on the windshield plate, the door-jamb sticker, the title and the registration) and enter it above. We retrieve every logged dealer visit and email the report within minutes. Compare it with the claim: a record that stops three years ago is not “full”, however good the folder looks. Your card is authorized but only charged if records are found.

What a thin record does and does not mean

Work done at an independent shop never reaches the manufacturer's system, so a well-maintained car can return a short dealer record. Treat a thin result as a question for the seller, not as proof of neglect, and ask for the independent shop's invoices. A make we do not cover returns nothing at all, and you are not charged.

Which makes are covered

We hold full dealership service records for BMW and Mini; warranty and recall records for Porsche; and workshop remarks for Jeep. Other makes are not covered yet, and the check tells you so before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'full service history' mean?

That every scheduled service in the car's life is documented. The phrase is British in origin and appears in US listings of European-brand and imported cars. On its own it says nothing about where the work was done; 'full dealer service history' (FDSH) is the stronger claim, meaning every service was performed at a franchised dealership of the manufacturer.

How can I verify a seller's 'full service history' claim?

Ask for the VIN and retrieve the manufacturer's dealer record. Every visit a franchised dealership logged appears with its date, mileage and work performed. If the record matches the claim, the claim is verified; if it stops years short, you have a question for the seller. $14.99, and no charge if nothing is on file.

Is a folder of receipts the same thing?

Receipts are evidence a buyer judges; the manufacturer's dealer record is the ledger those receipts were printed from, and it cannot be edited by the seller. Independent-shop receipts never reach that system, so a car with a good independent mechanic can have a thin dealer record and a thick folder. Both are worth reading.

Which makes have a dealer record we can retrieve?

We hold full dealership service records for BMW and Mini; warranty and recall records for Porsche; and workshop remarks for Jeep. Other makes are not covered yet, and the check tells you so before you pay.

Does the dealer record include title, lien or accident data?

No. Those come from state and insurance records and are what a vehicle history report covers. The dealer record is the maintenance side: what the dealer network did to the car and when.
