GM RPO codes · factory build sheet by VIN

GM RPO codes by VIN — every option code GM recorded

An RPO code lookup by VIN: every Regular Production Option code on a Chevrolet, GMC or Cadillac, from GM's own build record for the VIN. Engine, axle, paint, trim and every package, older vehicles included, where the glovebox label has faded. We show you which vehicle it is first, free; the build sheet is $7.99 and only charged if it exists.

Get the RPO codes for a GM VIN

We confirm the vehicle first, free, then you decide.

$7.99 for the full factory build sheet: paint, trim, transmission and every factory option. No account needed, and you only pay if we hold one for your vehicle.

The VIN is at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on the door-jamb sticker, and on the title, registration and insurance card.

How do I look up RPO codes by VIN?

Three ways: read the Service Parts Identification label in the glovebox; for a 2022-on vehicle, open GM's free window sticker; or get the factory build sheet, which lists every RPO code GM recorded for the VIN with a description of each, older vehicles included.

What RPO codes tell you

GM identifies every factory option with a three-character Regular Production Option code: the engine, the transmission, the axle ratio, the paint, the interior trim and each package. Parts counters, body shops and restorers work from them, and they settle what a listing claims: whether a truck really has the locking rear differential, the heavy-duty cooling or the trailering package.

KI4

The paint is an RPO code too. If the color is all you need, the paint code by VIN page shows where GM prints it on the vehicle, including the QR code GM added to the door label from the 2018 model year (GM TechLink).

Free first: GM's own window sticker, 2022 and newer

GM serves the original window sticker free for most 2022 and newer Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick vehicles, and some 2021s. It names the options and prices, though not every RPO code. Enter the VIN to try it before you buy anything.

A note on descriptions

GM has reused some codes over the decades, and a description can come from an older use of the same code. The Silverado above lists L83, its 5.3L V8, described as the 1980s 5.7L engine of the same code. Every code on the sheet is one GM recorded for the VIN; where a description surprises you, trust the code and check it against the vehicle. Your report repeats this note.

Where to find the VIN

  • Through the windshield, at the bottom corner on the driver's side.
  • On the sticker inside the driver's door jamb, and on the glovebox label itself.
  • On the title, the registration card and the insurance ID card.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are GM RPO codes?

RPO stands for Regular Production Option: the three-character code GM gives each factory option on a Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac or Buick, from the engine and the axle ratio to the paint, the interior trim and each package. Together, a vehicle's RPO codes are its build specification, which is why parts counters and body shops ask for them.

Can I look up GM RPO codes by VIN for free?

Partly. The Service Parts Identification label, usually inside the glovebox, prints the RPO codes, but on older vehicles it is often faded, peeled or missing. GM's own window sticker is free for most 2022 and newer vehicles (and some 2021s) and names the options, but not every code. The factory build sheet lists every RPO code GM recorded for the VIN, older vehicles included, for $7.99, and you are only charged if it exists.

Where is the RPO code sticker on a Chevy or GMC?

On most GM trucks and SUVs it is the Service Parts Identification label on the inside of the glovebox door. On some cars it is in the trunk, on the spare-tire cover or in the center console. It lists the VIN and a block of three-character codes. From the 2018 model year GM also prints a QR code on the certification label on the driver-side door pillar (on a Corvette, on the driver's door); GM says it carries many of the codes, the paint code included, but not all of them.

How do I find my GM paint code by VIN?

GM records the exterior paint as an RPO code, so it appears on the glovebox label and in the build sheet with the rest of the codes. The build sheet also names the factory color.

Why does a description look wrong for my vehicle?

GM has reused some RPO codes over the decades, and a description can come from an older use of the same code. On a 2014-on truck, for example, L83 is the 5.3L V8, even where the description reads like the 1980s engine of the same code. The code is the record; check any surprising description against the vehicle.

Which GM makes does it cover?

Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac, which returned build sheets for most of the US vehicles we tested. Buick returned nothing in our tests, so we don't sell it; for a 2022-on Buick, GM's free window sticker is the best record.

How much does it cost?

$7.99 per vehicle, with no account. The amount is only authorized on your card and taken once the build sheet arrives. If GM's record isn't on file, the authorization is released and you pay nothing.
