How do I check a car's dealer service records?

Enter the VIN above. We query the manufacturer's dealership system for every logged service visit and email the report, usually within minutes. $14.99, and no charge if nothing is on file.

What the report contains

When a car is serviced at a franchised dealership, the visit is written into the manufacturer's central system against the VIN: the date, the odometer reading, the dealership and the work done. That record follows the car through every owner and every state. We retrieve it and present it as one report, oldest visit first, so you can see the intervals and any gaps.

We hold full dealership service records for BMW and Mini; warranty and recall records for Porsche; and workshop remarks for Jeep. Other makes are not covered yet, and the check tells you so before you pay.

What it is not

It is not a title or lien check, an accident history or an odometer-branding record, and it does not include work done at independent shops, which never reaches the manufacturer's system. This report answers one question: what did the dealer network do to this car, and when.

Prepaid maintenance and the dealer record

Cars sold with a prepaid or complimentary maintenance plan are serviced at the dealer for the life of the plan, and every one of those visits is logged centrally. A car that has been through such a plan usually has an unbroken dealer record from new. A record that stops when the plan ended is itself useful to know before you buy.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How far back do records go?

As far as the manufacturer's digital system goes for that make, which for the makes we cover is roughly 2012 onward and sometimes earlier. Older cars may return a thinner record or nothing; if nothing is found you are not charged.

Will it show services done at an independent shop?

No. Only visits logged by the manufacturer's dealer network are in the central system. An independent shop's invoice is real evidence, but it is not in the data we can retrieve.

Is this a vehicle history report?

No. A vehicle history report covers title, liens, accidents and odometer branding from state and insurance records. We return something those reports leave out: the manufacturer's own dealership service records — each service visit the dealer network logged against the VIN, with the date, mileage and work performed. Use both; they answer different questions.

Which makes are covered in the United States?

We hold full dealership service records for BMW and Mini; warranty and recall records for Porsche; and workshop remarks for Jeep. Other makes are not covered yet, and the check tells you so before you pay.

What does a report cost?

$14.99. Your card is authorized at checkout but only charged if we actually find records for the vehicle. If nothing is on file, the authorization is released and you pay nothing.

Where do I find the VIN?

The VIN is a 17-character code. It is on the plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb, on the vehicle's title and registration card, and on the insurance ID card.

Does the state the car is registered in matter?

No. Manufacturer service records are stored against the VIN in the manufacturer's national dealer system, not against a state registration, so a car serviced in Texas and now registered in Florida keeps its history.
